Pope Leo XIV delivered a strong message against war and exploitation during a visit to Bamenda in western Cameroon, a region affected by a standing separatist conflict. Addressing an interfaith peace gathering, he criticized those who misuse religion and power for political and military gain, urging a decisive shift toward peace.
The visit brought global attention to the crisis, which has claimed over 6,000 lives and displaced more than 600,000 people since 2017.
Separatist fighters declared a temporary ceasefire to allow the pope’s visit.Despite ongoing peace efforts involving religious leaders, the conflict remains unresolved, with many locals expressing doubt about immediate change.
