Iranian President says Tehran seeks peaceful nuclear development, regional security and an end to what he describes as Western double standards
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has accused the United States and Israel of carrying out attacks against Iran, insisting that Tehran has the right to defend itself while remaining open to diplomatic negotiations.Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Pezeshkian rejected accusations that Iran was responsible for terrorism and regional instability, describing his country as a victim of military aggression.
The Iranian president said attacks on Iranian territory had targeted civilians and essential infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, universities, bridges and other facilities. He also referred to an attack on a sports hall in Lamerd, where he said children and other civilians were killed.Pezeshkian argued that Iran’s military capabilities were intended for national defence rather than territorial expansion, adding that the country would not seek permission from foreign powers to protect its sovereignty.
Iran defends its nuclear programmeThe president reiterated Iran’s position that its nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes, including healthcare, agriculture, industrial development and electricity generation. He rejected the idea that nuclear technology should remain the exclusive privilege of a limited number of countries, while stating that Iran does not consider nuclear weapons a source of security.
Pezeshkian said a lasting resolution to the nuclear dispute could only be achieved through an agreement that provides credible assurances about the peaceful nature of Iran’s programme while safeguarding what Tehran considers its legitimate rights. He also criticised international sanctions, arguing that their consequences disproportionately affect ordinary citizens, particularly low-income families and people requiring medical treatment.
