Sri Lanka CERT has warned parents and students about fraudulent social media advertisements promising admission to foreign universities, visas, overseas jobs and scholarships.
Scammers reportedly pose as representatives of leading universities, using fake documents, stolen photos and videos, email accounts and WhatsApp groups to appear legitimate.
Victims are persuaded to transfer registration fees and initial tuition payments to foreign bank accounts. After receiving hundreds of thousands of rupees, the scammers reportedly disappear.
Sri Lanka CERT urges the public to verify university representatives, official documents and bank account details through legitimate channels before making any payments.
