Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has urged the extension of the ongoing US–Iran ceasefire, warning that the fragile truce could collapse if not sustained, while cautioning against possible actions that may undermine diplomatic efforts.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Ankara with his Syrian counterpart Asaad Hassan al Shaibani, Fidan said the region is facing one of its most serious security challenges since the outbreak of hostilities on February 28, following US-Israeli strikes on Iran. He noted that although a Pakistan-mediated two-week ceasefire has created a narrow window for diplomacy, the situation remains highly unstable.
Fidan stated that Türkiye is coordinating closely with regional neighbours and international partners to preserve stability and support peace efforts, describing the temporary truce as a significant diplomatic development.
However, he cautioned that the current ceasefire period may not be sufficient and could require extension if agreed upon by the relevant parties. He further expressed hope that upcoming talks in Pakistan would help maintain the ceasefire and reduce the risk of renewed military escalation.
The Turkish foreign minister also called on the international community to remain vigilant against potential actions that could disrupt the agreement, warning against “acts of sabotage” that may jeopardize the fragile truce.Addressing developments in the region, Fidan also commented on Israeli strikes in Lebanon, warning that the expansion of hostilities underscores the urgent need for a lasting diplomatic settlement.
